I am humbled to share my story, my craft with the world. To take part in an age old  practice is to reach back thousands of years and learn from people who were doing exactly what I’m doing now. To add my own ideas and techniques to the ever-expanding body of wisdom, and to then give it away to future craftsmen just like myself is, truly meaningful. Wisdom is mankind’s greatest asset.

One day I decided to take a long walk. This notion took me to Spain, where I trekked 303 miles along the Camino de Santiago. The journey inspired me to get back into slow process image making. When I returned home to the States, I treated my inner artist to paints and canvas. I’ve been a full-time art-making-machine ever since.

I am influenced by Spanish Masters– Miró, Picasso, Gaudi, Dali. I am also inspired by street art, the evidence of time, distressed wood, rusty metal, patterns in nature, and music.

I have lived and worked in Southern California for over forty years. Most of my artwork is acrylic paint on canvas or linen using a process that derives the subject from a semi-abstract composition. I also love to work in pen on paper or pen and watercolor on paper using a more observational approach. Whatever method I use, I enjoy painting because it helps me to see the world in ways that I otherwise never would have. Lately, I find inspiration in the patterns, textures, and movements of animals.

Thanks to a little known space fantasy film called Star Wars which premiered in May 1977…it was by far the most amazing and Epic movie I’ve ever seen!  As for this 10 year old native kid at that time…I was totally blown away by the special effects which inspired me to pick up a pencil  and began drawing spaceships, characters and battle scenes from the movie which seemed to come natural at such a young age.

Present Day: My work is now recognized and appreciated by many at every exhibit I show, from Comic Con to people’s homes, coffee shops, wineries, restaurants, respectable galleries, beautiful hotels, live music concert halls and most of all…Charity events, because giving back is priceless!

Eva Luz a.k.a. Edgy Chola is an artist who has been designing jewelry for the past 18 years. Her strongest influence comes from her Mexican heritage and her love for Meso-American history and culture, Other forms of influences range from insects & bugs, dreams, astronomy to friends she has met along the way either in travel or in everyday living. Eva Luz creates beautiful and edgy jewelry using a combination of new/vintage beads and semi-precious stones. Her styles range from necklaces strung on fishing line creating a magical floating affect against the skin to a variety of bold and elegant sterling silver and vintage chain accessories. She has collected beads throughout the years either through travel or gifts from friends who reside in different parts of the world. Every piece of jewelry has a history. Each item may not carry just one, but many stories as to where and how they came together to be one beautiful piece of art.

Fabiana Foca was born in Brazil on April 20th 1981. Moved to San Diego in 2001 and have been locally doing art ever since. Mosaic art and Photography are the most noticeable mediums on Fabiana’s resume. The photography is manually transferred into the wood. One of a kind (unlike prints) every single photo is an original piece of art. All recycled wood for the wood transfers and recycled materials for the mosaics as well.

His work is on display at the Memorial Wall, Unitarian Univresalist Fellowship of San Diego, in Solana Beach, as well as the Wall of Remembrance, Sacred Heart Church of Ocean Beach (not open to the public).

The complexity of a story is what draws me to explore it through collage. It is difficult to examine gender inequality for example, without delving into historical standards, societal expectations, pop culture, media influence and the fluidly changing relationships between the genders. I was first fascinated by collage because of its piecemeal effect – the ability to use elements from any source, the more varied the better, and combine them in a way that tells a story one might not have seen from the individual elements. To have one piece jar against another but then flow into an other, and create a story through not only the pieces themselves but the connections between them as well, I believe embodies the complexity of the different elements coming together in a multi-faceted story.

When I’m not teaching yoga or working at my restaurant job, I like to sit down and relax with some cool jams, a big glass of coconut water (or coffee), and go into a deep jewelry-making meditation.  When the mood is right, I like to drift off into my creative zone for hours of end.  The act of creating and making things with my hands is so satisfying,…it’s a way of letting my creative energy flow, and finding expression through color and form.  Sometimes I will be listening to African drum beats or Hawaiian ukulele, and the music will inspire a more colorful palate of mixed stones together to create some rather funky pieces! Other times, I will play some Indian music or Native American flute, which creates a more meditative jewelry making process.

The jewelry pieces I create are a collection of unique and one-of-a-kind handmade items. I like to keep mixing it up; with new materials and stones, different techniques and methods of making the pieces. The styles are diverse and ever-changing. This is what keeps me making jewelry, – the shear freedom to make whatever I’m inspired to in that moment makes me feel so ALIVE! I love that my creative work can also bring beauty and happiness to someone else out there!

Jason Lane is the Principle of JXL Studio and a senior partner of Bells & Whistles Design/Build, the San Diego team responsible for popular destinations like The Starlite, The Smoking Goat, and UCSD’s The Loft. Lane sharpened his early creative teeth as front man for the infamous Aktionist Art Group Crash Worship and as a prop designer for clients such as Dita Von Tesse and Fantasy Inc. The Golly Pods came to life in a moment of playful reverie but frenzied attention from the international design circuit has demanded that JXL Studio make them a sell-able reality.

Jennifer Cooksey is an American artist living and working in San Diego, California. She is also the owner of After Dark Creations who specialize in Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) art and mixed media monster sculptures.  Jennifer had a multicultural upbringing, having a Mexican mother and Irish father gave her a unique perspective that she brings to traditional art. She also infuses her love of classic monsters and punk music into her work.

I’m a California native and live in beautiful San Diego with my husband and three kids. There are a few things that are necessary for my overall contentment and well-being, and they have been the same my whole life – traveling, exploring new places, meeting new people, creating, eating and cooking good food and spending time with friends and family. Then there are the little things that just make me giddy with happiness. That first sip of good strong coffee, anything handmade, the beach, freshly brewed sun tea, the color yellow, waking up in a new city, thrift store scores, a new magazine in my mailbox, long walks…and paint on my hands. I spent most of my adult life teaching English to students both here and abroad. This fulfilled my love of teaching and travel, but creativity has always played an important role in my personal growth. At one point, my need for even more creativity led me to painting, and I’ve never looked back. Painting is my passion and I’m so happy to share it with you!

June Rubin’s expertise in art comes naturally – she inherited the art gene from her mother. After acquiring a degree in Anthropology at UCLA, June attended and graduated from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She has worked as an illustrator, art director, art educator, and fine artist. June has designed giftwrap, tote bags, t-shirts and more. She enjoys teaching art to elementary students who inspire her with their creativity. June enjoys painting watercolors, acrylics, mixed media and collage. June enjoys world travel. For the True Blue art exhibit she created Diamonds in the Veins of Blue Leaves and a whimsical Blue Cat. She has exhibited her art in group and solo shows in her hometown, San Diego. She enjoys working out of her art studio in Liberty Station, San Diego.

One of the interesting things about creating something for people to look at is watching them look at it. It’s a bit surreal. The work came from you, but it’s not you. Much like your children, you created them but they came into the world wholly their own person, sometimes as if you had little to do with it. Standing back, I watch people get in close, take a step back, discuss it, want to touch it. They’re doing all the things that I do as I look at a piece. I am always interested in everything that went into a painting, so I usually sneak in close to decipher details and technique. I see many people doing this too. And coming back, I always like to see the people that come back to get a second look. Or a third.

Keith was born and reared in Brooklyn, New York and realized at an early age that he was gifted and destined to be an artist.  Keith graduated from High School of Art and Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.  He live in Sweden for 13 years and expanded his artistic focus while defining the art.  He returned to the States in 2001 and now lives and works in San Diego as a Tattoo and freelance artist.  Keith paints and draws in his free time as he expands his artistic knowledge and expresses his gift of creativity.

KimCHI (aka Linda Nguyen) is a San Diego native that grew up around Adams Avenue. Surrounded by several artists in her family, the expressive talent came naturally for her, and she has been creating since she was a child.

Her life experiences are her inspiration and her canvases capture your attention with their large scale and intricate detail. She also finds inspiration in the beauty and allure of sex and the female form. She displays the juxtaposition of dangerous beauty by adorning her girls with guns and ammo.

When KimCHI is not painting, she spends time designing costumes to cosplay for Comic Con International: San Diego. All components of her costumes are made by hand – she paints, forms, and sculpts everything from masks, weapons, and accessories. It’s a grueling process of trial and error, but the end results make everything worthwhile. She has been featured on several costume websites and even made an appearance on The Colbert Report. Eventually she would like to travel to other conventions in different cities to showcase her passion for cosplay.

While I have always been visually driven and artistically inclined, it wasn’t until I took an art history class in college that I was pushed to create a piece of art based on inspiration from another artist. I decided to attempt to create stencils and a layered piece of art using spray paints. I discovered a fascination with this process and an ability to recreate images in new found ways.  My goal is to sell pieces at affordable prices so that people can enjoy my art and I can enjoy making more!

Laurie grew up in Provence, a region of southeastern France; her curious mind took her to San Diego where she has been residing for the past seven years. Passionate about human rights and visual arts, she earned a Master’s degree in International Relations from San Diego State University while spending every free unit she had in the Art Department developing her craft. Her creative nature and love of cultural diversity inspired her to pass on her passion for the Arts and encourage people of all backgrounds to get in touch with their creative side. Laurie specializes in illustration and drawing. She regularly takes part in events organized by the local art community and her work has been featured in several art shows and galleries throughout San Diego.

Lisa was fortunate to grow up in a home environment that encouraged artistic expression. As a child, she drew creative inspiration from the different countries and cultures her family visited on yearly vacations. In high school, Lisa enrolled in a stained glass program, and discovered the artistic medium that would be her life’s calling.

During her 3 years in Switzerland, Lisa participated in several exhibitions. The first was a group showing called Arts Visuels au Garenne in Monthey, in 2002. Also in 2002, Lisa exhibited at the Swiss Museum of Stained Glass in Romont, Switzerland. And in 2003 she created a fused glass piece for an exhibition at Glasmalerei Peters in Paderborn, Germany. Lisa also won design awards for a private chalet in Champery, Switzerland and a trophy for an annual floral arranging contest in Monthey, Switzerland.

Since her 2004 inaugural solo exhibition at Dulcinea in San Diego, Lisa has paticipated in many exhibitions. Her work has been featured in the La Jolla Light, San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine, San Diego Uptown News, and Glass Craftsman Magazine.

Michael Carini received his artistic training in Los Angeles, studying at Loyola Marymount University while simultaneously serving as an apprentice under respected artists Jane Brucker and Roland Reiss. Graduating at the top of his class in 2006, Carini returned to his hometown in San Diego, where he currently maintains his studio.

Michael Carini’s creative visions will play with your senses and illuminate the human condition as he delves into the uncensored depths of his mind and invites you to catch a glimpse of the other side. Transmuting his medium through what he describes as a poetically alchemical process based upon the principles of equivalent exchange (Acrylic Alchemy), it is Carini’s hope that you will completely lose yourself within these labyrinthine experiences, only to discover a new sense of self and emerge reborn.
