Mona Lizzy’s Art Studio — 2610 Adams Ave — Punch Card

Artist: Brent Hefner

Brent Hefner began his love for art when he was a young boy. He was given a golden ticket and allowed inside a large beer brewing factory and led around by a strange man who liked to sing and dance with little people who sang songs making fun of other contest winners. He discovered at a young age the power of art but since singing and dancing really wasn’t his thing, he escaped and hid in Northern California.
He developed a love for drawing and painting and would draw pictures of skulls and demons while passing notes to girls in class. “Do you like me? Yes… No… Maybe….” This love for drawing developed into a full blown enterprise for Brent drawing pictures on notes for other people in school to pass off as their own.

By age 13 Brent was a full blown hundred-aire and was on top of the world until a girl went public with one of his notes and Brent was forced into art rehab. While in rehab 15 other girls came forward and snitched that Brent had been sending them art covered notes too. This forced Brent into hiding once again only to surface 10 years later….
In San Diego.  Part of his rehab was Brent was no longer allowed to make art on paper so he switched up and started tattooing people. Come in and meet with Brent as part of his lifelong battle with art addiction.

Cafe 21 — 2709 Adams — Stage / West End Beer Garden

Artist: Ginger Lou

Ginga paints, sculpts, designs clothing and has recently gotten into body painting. Not only is she a member of the local female artists’ collective Grrrrrl Power, but in 2003 she also created Visual Graffiti, a monthly event that occupies different bars and clubs around town and includes visual art, trunk shows and music . In 2003, she also started her own art-and-clothing business called 1/8 Fresh Gear and Art.

Noticeably women-centric, Ginga’s art includes many anime girls (often depicted kissing and holding one another), ’70s-style images of bohemian-looking women, and female icons like Audrey Hepburn and Diana Ross. There’s a conspicuous lack of masculine images in her artwork, yet she says she doesn’t identify as a feminist.

Twiggs Bakery & Coffeehouse — 2804 Adams Ave

Artist: Norma Cortez

Norma Cortez has been collecting  and selling vintage jewlery for 20 years.  She has also been making her own jewelry for the past 5, principally featuring turquoise.

I love the idea of finding/uncovering a piece of sterling silver jewelry at an estate sale or antique shop and ushering it into a new life with a new owner.  It’s kind of like match making for jewelry. I’ve been at the vintage side for about 8 years and recently started to silversmith my own pieces.

I’m one of the owners of Twiggs, which is how I earn money (at least most of the time it earns money).  I’ve been taking pottery classes for the past 12 years and enjoy the escape it offers me from the real world.  My work is mainly functional dinnerware and service ware, reflecting my love of cooking.
Dan Stringfield has been a potter for the past 15 years.  His pottery features utilitarian pots and plates

Soda and Swine — 2943 Adams Ave

Artist: Kristen Palumbo

While I have always been visually driven and artistically inclined, it wasn’t until I took an art history class in college that I was pushed to create a piece of art based on inspiration from another artist. I decided to attempt to create stencils and a layered piece of art using spray paints. I discovered a fascination with this process and an ability to recreate images in new found ways.  My goal is to sell pieces at affordable prices so that people can enjoy my art and I can enjoy making more!

Paleo Treats — 4662 30th St. — Punch Card

Artist: ManRabbit

Stop by all day during the event for free samples of delicious treats.

Carla Naden and Lee Selman make up the artistic duo of ManRabbit.  The two met through a Craigslist ad in 2007 and formed Quiet Hero, a popular t-shirt company that was sold in Nordstrom and Fred Segal.  T-shirts were not the end game for either of them, and after deciding to leave the rat race of fashion they needed a new outlet for their combined creative energy. Turning to mixed media, their first piece was auctioned off at the Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles and was bought by Richard Pryor’s wife.
ManRabbit has evolved into Carla and Lee making their mark in a male dominated art world. They collaborate weekly in a maelstrom of popcorn, bad TV shows, and a swirling pack of rescued dogs. You may catch glimpses of their life throughout their art, in pictures and ink spills and torn out pages from journals. At times Lee has cut out future pages of Carla’s day planner and surreptitiously placed them in more than one piece. Carla has since learned to not leave her day planner unattended.  Outside of ManRabbit, Carla owns Synergy Animal Rescue and works with senior and special needs dogs, she loves glitter and gold tattoos and the color fuchsia. Lee owns Paleo Treats® and practices Filipino street fighting.  Enough of this. You want good art? You want a good artist? Check out what we’ve done. If you dig it and it sings to your heart and you know you’re ready to step up to our jukebox of art and slip in a few quarters, we’re here.

Kaya Salon — 3036 Adams Ave

Artist: Annalise Neil

Annalise has studied myriad making techniques, including photography, ceramics, jewelry, weaving, basket making, painting, drawing, sculpture, wood working, and all forms of printmaking. She received a BFA in Printmaking from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, with a minor in Art History (summa cum laude). This program gave her a strong technical and image planning foundation, along with a penchant for delicate mark-making. In 2010, she worked as an illustrator on packaging and product information campaigns for Anthropologie. In 2014, she conceptualized and painted a 6’ x 20’ mural for a San Diego elementary school, which depicts plants and animals native to the area. She began painting watercolor in 2016, and has found it to be a medium that fits very neatly into the demands of being a full-time parent. She completed an Artist Residency in Motherhood between 2016-17. Annalise is a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society and the Oceanside Museum of Art Art Alliance, and has enjoyed showing with these groups as well as at other juried shows in and around San Diego. In addition to painting, she enjoys sourdough baking, hiking, and traveling.

Edward Jones — 3029 Adams Ave

Artist: Cassandra Schramm

Stop on in for open house refreshments all day during the event.

I am from Southern California, but i recently moved back to San Diego after 7 years of living in Boston. I have been painting my whole life but I have been a muralist for over 18 years.

My paintings are as random as my life. I am inspired by everything around me but my usual subject matter is eyes. The reflection and human connection associated with eyes. I have always found it hard to look someone in the eyes when I am talking to them. I have tried to be better at this as the years pass. When you make eye contact with another person, you let down your guard, it is growing vulnerability the longer the contact lasts. There are many theories on eye contact while talking, but I notice that there is a limit, most people must look away off and on, while talking.

Cotton and Flax — 3180 Adams Ave

Artist: Karina Bania

One of the interesting things about creating something for people to look at is watching them look at it. It’s a bit surreal. The work came from you, but it’s not you. Much like your children, you created them but they came into the world wholly their own person, sometimes as if you had little to do with it. Standing back, I watch people get in close, take a step back, discuss it, want to touch it. They’re doing all the things that I do as I look at a piece. I am always interested in everything that went into a painting, so I usually sneak in close to decipher details and technique. I see many people doing this too. And coming back, I always like to see the people that come back to get a second look. Or a third.

Artist: Michael Carini

Michael Carini received his artistic training in Los Angeles, studying at Loyola Marymount University while simultaneously serving as an apprentice under respected artists Jane Brucker and Roland Reiss. Graduating at the top of his class in 2006, Carini returned to his hometown in San Diego, where he currently maintains his studio.

Michael Carini’s creative visions will play with your senses and illuminate the human condition as he delves into the uncensored depths of his mind and invites you to catch a glimpse of the other side. Transmuting his medium through what he describes as a poetically alchemical process based upon the principles of equivalent exchange (Acrylic Alchemy), it is Carini’s hope that you will completely lose yourself within these labyrinthine experiences, only to discover a new sense of self and emerge reborn.

Adams Avenue Integrative Health — 3239 Adams Ave — Stage / Punch Card

Artist: Gretchen Vogt

The complexity of a story is what draws me to explore it through collage. It is difficult to examine gender inequality for example, without delving into historical standards, societal expectations, pop culture, media influence and the fluidly changing relationships between the genders. I was first fascinated by collage because of its piecemeal effect – the ability to use elements from any source, the more varied the better, and combine them in a way that tells a story one might not have seen from the individual elements. To have one piece jar against another but then flow into an other, and create a story through not only the pieces themselves but the connections between them as well, I believe embodies the complexity of the different elements coming together in a multi-faceted story.

Amy Baca Lopez Art Studio — 3325 Adams Ave - @ Discount Fabrics previous location

Artist: Amy Baca Lopez

One day I decided to take a long walk. This notion took me to Spain, where I trekked 303 miles along the Camino de Santiago. The journey inspired me to get back into slow process image making. When I returned home to the States, I treated my inner artist to paints and canvas. I’ve been a full-time art-making-machine ever since.

I am influenced by Spanish Masters– Miró, Picasso, Gaudi, Dali. I am also inspired by street art, the evidence of time, distressed wood, rusty metal, patterns in nature, and music.

You can find me at the Hillcrest Farmers’ Market every Sunday in San Diego.

Artist: Amber Jahn

It was in June 2015 that I published a feature on west coast artist Amber Jahn. Who would have thought, at that time, that this publication was to become the most read ever registered by the Bauge littéraire ? Is it because it has been published, right from the start, in two languages, that of the Bauge and that of the artist, opening my french-speaking space up to a much larger public ? Or is it the fascination raised by the tempest of colors that Amber’s brush stirs up without mistake ?

Thanks to a little known space fantasy film called Star Wars which premiered in May 1977…it was by far the most amazing and Epic movie I’ve ever seen!  As for this 10 year old native kid at that time…I was totally blown away by the special effects which inspired me to pick up a pencil  and began drawing spaceships, characters and battle scenes from the movie which seemed to come natural at such a young age.

Present Day: My work is now recognized and appreciated by many at every exhibit I show, from Comic Con to people’s homes, coffee shops, wineries, restaurants, respectable galleries, beautiful hotels, live music concert halls and most of all…Charity events, because giving back is priceless!

Artist: J. L. Anichowski

I was born and raised in Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada. Through my schooling there I came to the realization that all I wanted to do in life was paint and create. So I packed up and moved to southern California, where I have continued my learning, painting, and creating.

I’m inspired by life. The works of Salvador Dali, Micheal Parks, and the wonderful San Diego local artists I’ve come to personally know help to shape my vision. I find my paintings in the forms of the clouds, the bubbles in my bath, and in the playfulness of the creatures of nature.

Aaron CathcartI am humbled to share my story and my craft with the world; to take part in a traditional practice is to reach back thousands of years and learn from people who were doing exactly what I’m doing now. To add my own ideas and techniques to the ever-expanding body of wisdom, and to then give it away to future craftsmen just like myself is truly meaningful. Wisdom is mankind’s greatest asset.                     Link

Just six years old I wanted to be a cowgirl. Teenage Suzanne wanted to be a professional ice skater. The early twenties you could find me swimming and do water ballet. Always in the background, I did art. Art for me is like an invisible red string running through my life trying my personalities together. In my early thirties, I decided to narrow my artistic focus to silk art.

That was half a lifetime ago. Instead of narrowing my focus, I found that silk art broadened my horizons and smoothed some of my jagged artistic edges.

Artist: Anna Iris Graham

I have lived and worked in Southern California for over forty years. Most of my artwork is acrylic paint on canvas or linen using a process that derives the subject from a semi-abstract composition. I also love to work in pen on paper or pen and watercolor on paper using a more observational approach. Whatever method I use, I enjoy painting because it helps me to see the world in ways that I otherwise never would have. Lately, I find inspiration in the patterns, textures, and movements of animals.

Exhibition Location: Clay Associates

Artist: Eric Woods

Artist: Evelyn Goldman

An autodidact in ceramics, I was introduced to clay at the Genesee Co-op Communiversity in Rochester, New York in 1972.  For the most part, my work is wheel thrown; stoneware is my medium. While confining myself to the rigors of the potter’s wheel, my personal challenge is produce work which contains strong organic elements. .

In recent years, I have been exploring the wide world of hand built ceramics. The results are wedge and box shaped plant holders, along with the beginnings of sculptural forms.

Artist: Gerald Thiebolt

His work is on display at the Memorial Wall, Unitarian Univresalist Fellowship of San Diego, in Solana Beach, as well as the Wall of Remembrance, Sacred Heart Church of Ocean Beach (not open to the public).

Artist: Shaun Craig

I am a 4th generation San Diego native who grew up loving the mountains, desert and beaches. Drawing was my first love until I discovered clay in the 3rd. grade. I am continually inspired by natural and native elements in my environment.  I am constantly finding inspiration from sticks, rocks, pinecones and other elements of nature. The complex simplicity in the forms is a source of never ending fascination for me. I love to use art in my life so when people have a piece of mine I want them to use it and enjoy it in an everyday setting.

Artist: Warren Bakley

I hold a Bachelor of Fine arts degree from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA with continuing study in ceramics and clay arts at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Maine and Alfred University, Alfred NY. My work experience has been as Exhibits Designer with the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, Design Consultant for American Olean Tile Company, Landsdowne, PA, Interior Designer with three major architectural firms, and institutional and residential projects as an Associate with Diversified Interior Design Associates, Philadelphia, PA.

My teaching experience has been of graduate level design at Drexel University and Moore College of Art. As well as classical Art and Sculpture through Trenton State UniversityDesign, San Diego State University, the Community Colleges of Cuyamaca and Southwestern in California and Ceramics at Clay Associates.

I am a nine times first prize winner of the annual Sculpture Division, Imperial Beach Sand Sculpture Competition, Imperial Beach, CA.

Artist: Michael Nobel
My work in Ceramics is an exploration of nature as a medium to finding new self-truths. The forms that I work with explore soulful moments of life transitions as a son, father, and lover.  While studying ceramics at George Fox University I was introduced to Anagama (wood) and Raku firing. My foundation in art is based on the complexity that is explored in the Edo period of Japanese Art.

Michael Noble currently holds the position of Associate at Clay Associates in San Diego, CA. His work in Ceramics for the last seventeen years has been in wheel throwing and hand-building. Michael has worked as an Artist in Residence at Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. He studied art at George Fox University in Portland, Oregon and other schools in Maryland.

Creating ceramics is a constant journey. Beginning my journey 6 years ago as a Student at Clay Associates. Trying new glazes and different techniques keeps it fun and interesting. Mostly I like the experimental aspect of creative process, I never really know what I am going to get.

The resulting explosion created an unstable art field that was absorbed by the newborn. His work is the mashed-up root pulp extract of 80s cartoons, spray paint Kung Fu along highway underpasses, the four color comics of every age, textile manufacture and whatever else he can work into the divine blender that is his head and his hands. Get Fit on Adams — 3806 Adams Ave

Artist: Michelle Ferrera

I believe Art, in any form, is not only self-healing, but also provides a safe place to communicate and break down stigmas, taboos, and walls. There is beauty in flaws, self-reflection in creative expression, and connections through honest dialogue. From my garage studio, I turn my journal entries into freehand drawn, figurative portraits using pencil (sometimes incorporating mixed media) on handpicked, cut and framed wood panels. The inspiration for my art is simple #theartoflife.  MDFerrera Fine Art is a combination of education, practice, experience and experimentation; which allows my perspective as a female artist to remain traditional yet contemporary. Art is how I balance life, love, motherhood and the artists’ brain while offering hope through vulnerability.

Artist: Ponce’s

Ponce’s Mexican Restaurant will not have an artist day of, but they are are fully supporting Art Around Adams as a Community Sponsor with their community mission.

The Meza family is not here just to make money. They are here to enrich the lives of all the people who walk through the doors here at Ponce’s. This includes the employees – who are able to support their families, pay their rent, work their way through college, raise enough money to travel, or many other things we’ve yet to see; the guests – who are able to shed their stresses when they sit down to a comfortable, affordable meal at the end of a long work day, or to establish family traditions by gathering for a weekly meal, and so on; and the organizations that we support. It is through these filters that we view our success.  We’ve done it for over forty five years, and we hope to continue to do so for many more.

Buddies and Babes — 4071 Adams Ave

Artist: Paul Naylor

My name is Paul Naylor, I’m an illustrator/designer living in San Diego, where I’ve been my whole life.  I have been drawing since I was three, and currently specialize in acrylic paintings / illustration, and also enjoy logo and general design.  I have a Bachelor’s Degree from the Art Institute of San Diego in graphic design.  I’ve been lucky enough to perform and educate for audiences at the San Diego Zoo, Downtown Disney, and many other events around the US. I currently work with my friends and mentors at Launch Live Art, where I paint, perform, and have even played live percussion.

I was drawn to graphic design because I was intrigued by the idea of using typography artistically, and I’ve always loved art associated with underground music and film, especially from decades past where emphasis was heavy on hand-rendering. I also play drums in a couple local bands, and love when visual art and music can be combined. Big influences on my art include a long love of animals, old horror and sci-fi movies, vast natural landscapes (especially Yosemite), Godzilla, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mid-Century Modern design, and music.
